THE RESIDENCE
Today the façade of this approximately 3,100 square foot townhouse retains the history and elegance for which it has been awarded while the interior is an opportunity to create a thoroughly modern residence located steps off Park Avenue.

All five levels of the 20' by 25' open footprint provide several possibilities for exceptional living space with a fifth floor solarium and roof terrace providing great views of the Empire State Building. PLEASE NOTE: There are unused air rights which may permit creating additional floors. Architect plans for a single-family configuration are also upon request. This townhouse is built 20' x 25' on a 25' deep lot. While there is no rear garden, there is a wonderful row of windows along the rear façade which allow for tremendous light to pass through the entire residence.

THE BLOCK
Originally built in 1868-69 by developer A. B. Embury and architects David and John Jardine of Jardine, Hill and Murdock who most notably designed the Fifth Avenue Baptist Church, as one in a row of five similar Second Empire-style brownstone dwellings from 128 to 136 East 38th Street. David Jardine lived in 136 East 38th Street for over fifteen years, while further up the street, Ziegfeld Follies performer Ida Adams had purchased 130 East 38th Street.

Once converted back to a single-family home in 1995, classicized window and door surrounds were installed, the facade was covered with pigmented cement stucco, and a new bracketed, pressed-metal cornice was put up. In 1997 the Murray Hill Association gave the house a preservation award.

THE ARCHITECT MASON
As a significant New York City Mason, Stacey Pitcher was instrumental in creating multiple Historic Landmarks throughout the city. Noted for his overindulgent Greek Revival style he is credited with the architectural drawings of the Post Hospital on Governor's Island, constructed in 1839. Also strongly reminiscent of his Greek Revival style is the block front of Jane Street, between Hudson and Greenwich streets. Erected in 1848, 62 Jane Street stands in this fine row of craftsmanship. The versatile Stacey Pitcher died on April 20, 1865 as Governor of New Jersey.

THE BLOCK
Nos. 60-64 Jane Street demonstrate the exceptional masonry of Stacey Pitcher which is specifically demonstrated in the ironwork and design of the hand railings at the stoop. No. 62 is the most notable in shape and curvature and is the only house of the three to retain the original wrought iron railing. The original window lintels also remain on No. 62, adding to the sophistication of the floor-length French Windows. The basement windows also have their original wrought iron bars. The historical elegance of this row is unified by the modillioned cornices of 60, 62 and 64 which extend in a continuous line around the end of the building at the corner of Jane and Greenwich Streets.

THE BUILDING
Built 21.33 feet wide and positioned 35 feet deep on a 47-foot lot, this approximately 3100 square foot residence receives tremendous natural light from its three tall windows across each floor. From the grand front stoop, the foyer, leads to the first level of a lovely space now configured as a triplex. The large front living room includes a fireplace, two tall windows looking onto the cobblestoned Jane Street and the common garden of the building across the street. In the rear, the kitchen is beside the dining room which also includes a fireplace. There is a half-bath off the corridor.

The third floor features a large rear bedroom with a full bath beside it off the main corridor. To the front a large bedroom with tall windows facing Jane Street and an adjacent office. On the fourth floor there is a large master bedroom in the rear with a fireplace and two large closets. There is a full bath off the corridor and to the front, with tree-line views of Jane Street, a grand and bright office with two windows facing north.

Accessed via a second entry below the front stoop, the garden level is configured as a one-bedroom apartment with kitchen and bath, presently vacant, with direct access to the garden.

COMBINATION POSSIBLE
60 Jane Street is now on the market affording the possibility of a combination with 62 Jane for a building of over 43 feet in width. Please contact us immediately for information about this unique opportunity.
